Research:-

Media product's promotion

For my promotion, I had to do research on the basics. I learned about a few of the main ways to promote and some common ways to reach my target audience through promotions. After tons of research, I saw the major channels to promote my SF (short film). Some very impactful and speedy ways to promote are

  1. Create a social media page

  2. Share your trailer

  3. Write an engaging post

  4. Make use of hashtags

  5. Use attractive visuals

Out of these different channels and ways to promote, I noticed that in recent times, social media has been a huge hit (proven through research). Despite not being too detailed and rather evasive with its conveying of informational output, Social media, especially platforms such as Instagram and Youtube, are a very fast way to reach people, having almost over 2 hours of screen time for all individuals on average.

Thus, making a social media page and promoting my SF through Instagram posts, snipets, and trailers is a very effective way because, in recent times, there has been a huge craze for Instagram and creative visuals. Which makes it very efficient because Instagram is one of the top social media platforms, is linked to Facebook, and is one of the most useable and convenient platforms to use for consumers.

Short film publishing

I  actually already had an idea of where publishing is best for a short film because during my hunt for a genre for my short film I had to watch over 30 short films. To understand and analyze how short films work and what is their structuring and frameworking like, in order to finally choose a genre for my media product, my short film.

SF (Short film) are most viewed on Youtube, I had studied about why it is so because so many  OTT platforms exist and moreover so many websites and overall just streaming platforms. I mean they do have a certain amount of short films however, barely, which got me thinking 'why?' When I searched it up on Google the number one result that showed up, is the golden word 'exposure', explaining - 'One of the biggest advantages of YouTube is the potential exposure your short film can gain from its platform. With so many people visiting the site, your film has a good chance of pulling in a high number of views, especially if it's a quality film that's engaging.'  Which is very reasonable because it seems so much more exclusive that way

Also most studies emphasise how when one thinks of short films they immediately connect it to Youtube, which is unique and also a symbolic code impacting both the media type as well as the media platform.

After all my research, obviously I chose to publish my SF on Youtube because of the above. Also with the help of my promotions through Instagram, it's is easier to link all of my work and make it look more organized for my audience to understand and look forward to.

--- Questioner ---

I made a questioner in order to understand whether I was going on the right track (with respect to promotions). Questions such as 'what age categories, like what kind of movies?' and 'how long of a short film, are viewers willing to invest their time and watch' arised my mind and I didn't want to assume anything. So, to know for sure, I made a questioner and sent it to my friends, classmates, parents and my family. I sent it to such a wide variety of an audience to understand the thinking process and what people truly liked (based on their age).

Postcard Advertisement

Postcard advertisement is more or less marketing of a short film through marketing in the format of a private, commercial and almost always in a stiff paper format. It is usually made with the motive of making it easy for consumers to understand. It is in fact the first mode of media advertisings to exist.

This is literally why the format of the post card is so generic and easy to understand. The template looks something like this:

Research:-

I learnt about the production of a 'shortfilm's' postcard because it seemed to be a completely different topic, all together my research consisted of me having to learn the conepts required to make a postcard advertisement.

My postcard advertisement had a very simple template all together, it consists of a picture with

Movie poster

Honestly I have no idea what I want my poster to look like. However, after seeing almost a 100 posters I've liked a few types. I love the concept of using extreme close ups of faces and sort of showing plane vulnerable facial features of characters. One more type I loved were the cluster ones, they were so impactful in my opinion because it is next to impossible for a person to full see everything in the poster and thus, making room for consumers to interpret the roles of particular characters and what significance they might bring to a movie.

I thought that it was a must for me to learn how to make a poster because I would need that knoledge to construct the front page of my postcard. The depth and storytelling power in a poster is what I needed to lead to ultimately make an effective postcard cover.

For my postcard I was very precise with the concepts as well as what I wanted for the contents to convey -

TITLE:-
For my title, or rather, the logo of my film, I decided to go ahead and use the most cursive font I could find. I felt the need to use a font that was more dramatic than similistic. Also, the red paint shows variation in colour palette to form familiarity with the genre of my film, as I knew that red paint would instantly ignite an understanding of wrongdoing and scandel.
TAGLINE:-
'Innocence, a tool to lie', my tagline was rather simple and open to interpretation, which is ironic given my intention behind designing the title as it is. This was primarily because I wanted the storyline's intentions to be portrayed, i.e., complete freedom to make assumptions about what the story is really trying to convey.
IMAGE:-
Visuals mean the world to me and I truly believe that one remembers more when they see rather than listen or read. So, I wanted to use every single lesson I had ever learned in media in the past two years to implement this in my postcard. I took a picture that was shot from a low angle, tilted to the top angle, using the rule of thirds to place my lead in the left-middle of the grid. However, I must admit that my colour grading played more of a role than my picture itself, making my lead look prominant and ironically white, representing innocence.
CREDENTIALS:-
This semester, it was necessary for me to learn how to make a 'film festival' logo. After which, I made a name and marked the status of my short film at that film festival. As my whole production process had been too short, it seemed not ideal to mention previous winnings, so I mentioned selections instead. On the back of my postcard, I also mentioned when the particular screenings would occur.
CREDITS:-
I made the names of all the personalities involved in the making of 'Do we deserve the love we choose?' small and crisp. I did not want there to be way too many focus names because I thought it would be distracting, as in my other forms of promotion, I only focus on selling my film with the help of my cast and myself and so considering the postcard for my film was another significant way of promotion, I wanted it to primarily sell my film as a brand.
LINKS:-
I did not have much regarding my short film on social media except an Instagram account and that is exactly what I decided to add to the postcard. I added a beautiful QR code on the back of the post card to scan, which takes my consumers to the film's account. I also added my own credits for further details.
REVIEWS:-
I considered a bold and prominent Indian newspaper and thus chose 'The Deccan Chronical'. I went ahead and mentioned a quote that was short and straight forward. It was the best idea because it gave the perfect look and feel to my postcard, almost like a cherry on top.
